Electronic discovery (commonly referred to as e-discovery or ediscovery) refers to various processes in which electronic data may consist of:
(1) undergoing forensics analysis including but not limited to, the removal of security (e.g., encryption, compression, password protection); (2) processing; (3) searching & locating; (4) tagging/coding; (5) reviewing, often done by attorneys, legal personnel or their experts; and (6) carrying out Analytics processes, all of which is ultimately done with the intent of using it as evidence in a civil or criminal legal matter. E-discovery can be carried out offline on a machine such as a PC or Mac, or it can be carried out in a network or cloud, typically in matters/cases involving several million documents where there is a constant or regular flow of information and electronic data.
